Hollywood marriages often come with an expiration date. Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard keep proving the opposite. The Nobody Wants This star and the Armchair Expert host have built a relationship on blunt honesty, a sense of humor and plenty of therapy, and they talk about all of it in public.
Two Careers, One Strong Partnership

Both stars are riding high. Bell earned a 2025 Emmy nomination for her Netflix comedy Nobody Wants This. Shepard hosts the hit podcast Armchair Expert and has added a newer show, Mom’s Car. Their real edge, though, comes from self-awareness, mutual support and open communication.
Bell has said she feels secure about Shepard’s on-screen romances, for example. When he kissed Minka Kelly on Parenthood, she cheered him on. She had the same reaction to her own steamy scenes with Adam Brody, and Shepard reportedly urged her to lean into them. Her take: they’re married, not dead.
From “Who Is This Guy?” to Love
The pair met in 2007 at a friend’s birthday party. Bell was not impressed at first and remembers mostly how much he talked. Two weeks later, a mutual friend brought Shepard to a Los Angeles Kings game, where a freshly single Bell was also sitting. Shepard started chatting with her and even asked for her gum.
He had already tracked down her number through the party’s host. Within months, they were dating.
The Breakup That Lasted Four Days
About two months in, Shepard ended things because he was still seeing other people and wanted to treat Bell with respect. She was crushed. He called four days later and admitted he had made a mistake. Bell now sees the early breakup as proof of his integrity.
Tough Conversations That Built Trust
The couple has never hidden the hard parts. Bell has said Shepard’s wild past worried her at first, especially since he told those stories so casually. Couples counseling helped them find a fix: Shepard now adds a clear acknowledgment that those days are behind him. In September, Bell marked his 21 years of sobriety with a rare family photo carousel on Instagram.
Her fighting style needed work too. Bell used to storm out and sit in her car around the corner. Three months in, Shepard told her he wouldn’t live that way, and she agreed to stay and talk things through.
Lady Lincoln and Other Love Triangles
Bell also had to share Shepard with his 1967 Lincoln Continental, nicknamed “Lady Lincoln.” She jokes that the car is her “sister wife.” The couple has racked up an estimated 20,000 road-trip miles, though they had to negotiate travel habits, like Shepard’s urge to tow an off-road vehicle everywhere.
A Courthouse Wedding With a Purpose
Bell and Shepard got engaged in 2009 but delayed the wedding for years. After California’s Proposition 8 passed, they refused to celebrate a right many of their friends lacked. They welcomed daughter Lincoln in March 2013. When the Supreme Court struck down the Defense of Marriage Act that June, Bell proposed again the same day. They married at a low-key courthouse ceremony. Their second daughter, Delta, arrived in December 2014.
Marriage Advice From a Self-Described “Old Married Woman”
Bell shared her relationship tips in a handwritten Valentine’s Day note in 2018:
- Stay vulnerable with your partner
- Appreciate the privilege of having one
- Carve out time for yourself
- Stay open to new ways of solving problems
She has also admitted that being a “#goals” couple adds pressure. Even so, she says they’re too invested to split and compares them to polar opposites who argue over everything but share deep trust. She believes that friction pushes both of them to grow.
Why Fans Keep Rooting for Them
Bell and Shepard never pretend to be perfect. Shepard has described their disastrous first Armchair Expert episode together, and he once decided the whole picture, from glossy holiday ads to shouting matches over craft stores, is what makes a marriage real.
That candor explains why the pair remains one of Hollywood’s most beloved couples. They keep it funny, keep it honest and keep showing up for each other.
